Bio: Jennifer Myers is the author of the children’s books Dinosaurs Get Divorced Too and It’s A Scavenger Hunt: Can You Find It In The Painting? As an Art Therapist she has worked with children and families in school and hospital settings using creative interventions to initialize coping strategies and resolve conflict. Ms. Myers studied clinical psychology at Columbia University and received a Master of Art in Art Therapy from New York University. She is a registered Art Therapist as well as a certified trauma therapist from the National Institute of Trauma and Loss in Children.

An Art Therapy Directive

Expressive activities help children with Pervasive Developmental Disorders gain a sense of control, mastery of their environment and grow in their self-expression and self-awareness.

OBJECTIVES

To facilitate imagination and abstract thinking
To further develop sensory regulation and integration
To improve visual-spatial perception
To foster emotions and self-expression

MATERIALS

Paper/Felt
Pens/Markers/Glue
Any additional craft Materials.
Hot glue gun if necessary

PROCEDURE

Cover the table with butcher paper or newspaper. Have materials accessible.

Fold paper, felt or newspaper length wise
Have the child or if unable the instructor write the name on the fold.
Turn the paper and write the name again on the fold or if using paint write the name and fold in half, will create mirror image.
Decorate inside of name with materials
Cut around the name when complete
Paste name bug to stick or clothes pin.

MODIFICATIONS/ADAPTATIONS

Provide demonstration
Try use puff paint to write names, fold paper and have a mirror of name on other side of fold.
Use cursive writing if child is old enough
